Latest Club Newsletter1) NEW PRESIDENT - SIMON CARD OBE RHS 1967The Royal High School Club in London now has a new President, Simon Card OBE 1967, Head of Executive Relationships with B.T. 1.1) HAND OVER TOOK PLACE AT 2004 ANNUAL DINNER
Simon began his two year team in Office at this years' very successful Annual Dinner on 19th March held at The Hotel Russell, Russell Square, WC2. The evening was a great success with 46 attendees - a record in recent times. The evening itself started unofficially at 5.30pm with a Committee Meeting, which witnessed the induction of Al Senter RHS 1971, Alex Prentice 1972 and Simon Card OBE RHS 1967 on to the Committee. The main thrust of the evening then began at 6.30pm as dinner guests began to arrive, welcomed by club piper Chris Craig RHS 1991 on the bagpipes. Drinks took place in the cocktail room adjoining the Old Library. The official hand over of the badge of office, from the his long-serving predecessor Janette Scantlebury RHS 1981, took place before the meal and was followed by a few short words. In keeping up with recent club tradition a few group photos were taken by myself before all bar the top table moved through to the Old Library to be seated for dinner. The top table were then piped by the club piper, followed by new President Simon Card OBE RHS 1967 and notable guests including The Rector George Smuga, The President of The Royal High School Club (Edinburgh) Mr. Alan Grosset RHS 1959, recently retired Deputy Rector and now Honorary Member (and attendee) of the London Club Dr. John Murray and Willie Docherty, Chief Executive of The Royal Scottish Corporation. Grace and the Loyal Toast were said by The President, as was the toast to The Tounis School and The Club. Replies were eloquently delivered by The Rector on behalf of the School and The RHSC President, on behalf of the Edinburgh Club. Willie Docherty said a few words to raise awareness of the good work done by the RSC - a worthy charity which has been helping needy Scots in London since 1603. Al Senter RHS 1971 then proposed a vote of thanks to Simon and Janette and the formal proceedings for the evening were drawn to a close as John Murray led everyone in a rousing rendition of Vivas Schola Regia, followed by Plops on the bagpipes. Guests then moved merrily to the bar and off in the streets and clubs of London... There has been around 20 new members since 2001 and in 2002 the club had a record membership in recent times of 57 persons. Janette made club history in the 1980's by becoming the clubs' first lady member. She followed this up in the 1990's by become the first lady to be elected on to the RHSCL Committee. In 1999 Janette become the clubs' first lady Secretary - a position which see held until 2001 when you moved on to become the first lady President of the club. Janette also became the first President in the 116 year history of the club to serve three years in office, and certainly the first to reside in Shetland during the term in office! Although Janette's term as President has now come to an end, we are pleased that she will continue to serve the club as a Committee member. Please join with me in thanking Janette for her services and wishing Simon all the very best over the next two years of his Presidency. In due course, Simon will be in touch to all RHS FP's in London. 2) 5 NEW MEMBERS FOR 2004 Please also join me in welcoming FIVE new "fully paid" members to The Royal High School Club in London for 2004: Melanie Mareuge-Lejeune 1994-99 Douglas Muir-Taylor 1950 Shaw Statham 1970 David Wilson 1966 David Denham (joined 2003) 1977 3) MEMBERSHIP FOR 2004 So far for 2004, the RHSCL has 52 "fully paid" members.
