It was another great evening. >60 attendees were
welcomed by superb piping of Liv McLennan on arrival - Liv
was so Pipetastic that the male pipers were scared away - practicising at their
Annual Competition at the Caledonian Club. At 7.30pm, Simon Card
OBE, President of The Royal High School Club in London, our ever
own Master of Ceremonies grabbed everybody's attention in his usual
commanding fashion before calling upon Wylie White,
Chairman of "The Corporation", who welcomed us all again and thanked us for
our continued support. Charles from Classic Tours then gave a brief
introduction to the group about The Two Lochs Challenge, an RSC
charity cyling event to be held in Scotland next June 17-20th - details to
follow. RSC Fundraiser Lorna Duncan then drew the raffle for
the merchandise so kindly donated by Lunnainn Albannaich Tartan
Army (www.loonyalba.com represented
Scott Kelly, Kevin Donnelly et al.). Eddie took to usual
group photo. Around 8pm, the group were entertained by Emma
Jane Thommen - our/RHSCL/Scots in London's very own
fabulous 24 year old Songstress, Writer and Pianist - Scotland's answer to
Natalie Imbruglia - who sang and played, so wonderfully, eight of her
own songs and attracted more groupies (and CD sales). At 10.30pm those whom
remained headed to the Essex Serpentine over the road.
Thanks to all those who attended for the first time, especially the
Liv McLennan for her dazzling display on the pipes and Alison Hood representing

Annual Buffet: Wed 21 November 2001, The Royal Scottish Corporation, Covent Garden38 attended, including several new faces. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. |
|
Annual Buffet: Wed 15 November 2000, The Royal Scottish Corporation, Covent GardenAs those of you who attended will be aware, Liz Lauder was convalescing from an operation and so the ladies from Rothesay Court were unable to provide the catering service which has been so good in previous years. However, Marks and Spencer, Tescos and a local deli. provided some tasty snacks and the Corporation's caretaker provided my entertainment while getting the snacks from the kitchen to the Board Room! After a few minor incidents with the smoke alarm, I think all of us there enjoyed a very pleasant evening. |
|
Annual Buffet: Wed 15 November 1999, The Royal Scottish Corporation, Covent GardenHeld in the Boardroom of The Royal Scottish Corporation, Covent Garden - a charitable organisation for needy Scots within a 30 mile radius of Trafalgar Square ().The evening corresponded with the England v Scotland Euro 2000 qualifying match at Wembley. The young crowd marched off to watch the match in a local pub. It was a pretty good night - Scotland won 1-0...but unfortunately we lost 2-1 on aggregate ! It wasn't until Scotland beat England at Murrayfield in the Five Nations in March of 2000 that we could really cheer out loud (to stop England winning the Grand Slam) !!! This photo was taken at the end of the night. Apologies to those who had left ! Haste Ye Back ! |

Committee Changes: Two Members Step Down and New Golf Captain Appointed, April 2003Two ex-London Club Presidents and prominent Committee members, Alan Rose RHS 1949 and (Ret'd) Wing Commander Alan Robertson RHS 1951, have decided to step down from the London Committee. Alan Rose was the club president in 1984. Until his resignation, he was also the Club Golf Captain for many years. Alan felt that it was now right to pass on the reigns to a younger golfer. Alan Robertson was club president from 1998 until 2000. He is also a former Secretary of The Royal Scottish Corporation , the London-based Scottish Charity to help needy Scots within a 35 mile radius of London. The input and enthusiasm of both Alan's will be greatly missed, however both have pledged to still attend club events, whenever possible; we look forward to seeing them. Thanks on behalf of the club for their great job over the years. Alan Rose suggested that Paul Cursiter RHS 1991 would make an ideal replacement as Golf Captain. This was agreed by the Committee and so Paul is now the new RHSCL Golf Captain. Paul's first task as Captain will be to distibute details and unofficially mustering a team(s) for the London Scottish Regimental Invitation Golf Day (open to all Scots) on May 7. His first official role will be to muster up a team(s) for the Annual Golf Day at Denham run-by the London Scottish Schools Golfing Society. Full details of both events to follow. If you are interested in playing golf, whatever your level, please contact Paul on 0208 319 0977 or email cursiter@yahoo.com . The President, Committee and Club would like to wish Paul all the best in his new role. New Members, 11 in year to November 2002So far this year, 11 new fully-paid up members have joined (including those below). In addition to the 8 new joiners mentioned in the June 2002 newsletter, please join with me in also welcoming: New Members & Committee Changes, June 2002The Club would like to welcome the following new members who have joined recently: |

New club Website, June 2002The Club has launched its own website, which can be accessed via http://www.royalhighlondon.org.uk . The site contains a plethora of information: "about the club", "what we do", "happy days" (recollections of teachers and their nicknames and different eras of the school), "events", "shop" and details about "subs", "the general fp site" (which includes discussions and club photos), "contacting the club" and "links" to other useful websites.William Dunnett RHS 1969 initiated the idea of the website and followed it through to completion. On behalf of the President and the Club, I would like to say a big thank you to Webmaster Will for creating such a good site. In addition, thanks to the 30 individuals who kindly responded to the email request asking for "teachers nicknames", included in the "happy days" section, especially to Robert Dunnett RHS 1969, Ian Cuthbert RHS 1950 and Jim Randell RHS 1944. The size and quality of the response was unanticipated. Going forward, with the permission of the contributors, Will aims to add new articles and features on a regular basis. If you have any contributions or comments, contact him at webmaster. . Please could you help us raise awareness of the existence of the club by spreading the word to other RHS FP's, wherever they may be. |

Membership, January 2001The January 2001 newsletter unfortunately started with the very sad news that, one of our oldest Club members, Dan Logan, died just before Christmas. Dan was always keen to attend Club functions and indeed was at the cheese and wine party in November. I have written to his family passing on the condolences of the Club. He will be sadly missed. |

Committee Change, January 2001This will be my last newsletter as Secretary and Treasurer (Janette Scantlebury RHS 1981). From 23rd March, Edward Tait RHS 1991 will take over in this role although the handover will probably actually take place some time shortly after the Annual Dinner. We will try to make the handover as smooth as possible, but inevitably, there may be a few delays or hiccups for which we apologise in advance! |

Subscriptions, January 2001As you will be aware from the November 2000 Newsletter, the annual subscription (now due) is being increased to £15 to cover the increased costs in running the Club and its events. Many of you have standing orders set up to pay your subs. I (Janette Scantlebury RHS 1981) am informed by our bankers that most banks will accept your telephone or written instructions to them to increase the amount payable. However I know that some request that a fresh mandate is completed. There is therefore a mandate form enclosed with this newsletter for you to complete and send to your bankers. If you do not currently have a mandate set up but would like to start one, please also complete the form. Currently most of the standing orders are payable in March. As the Club's accounting year now runs from 1 January, it would be useful if you could arrange for the payment to be made in January or February. I would be grateful if you could also return the lower part of that page to me, regardless of how you wish to pay your subscriptions. This allows us to know whether we should expect a standing order payment for your subs and if a payment does not arrive, whether we should be chasing you, or asking you to chase up your bank. A number of members seem to forget whether they have set up a standing order or not.. If I am aware that you have, I have ticked the box on this form for you. (This saves you also sending me a cheque which I then have to return to you.) |
