LAST QUARTERLY DRINKS BASH - WED 6 OCT Click here for PHOTOS from the evening
It was another great evening. >60 attendees were welcomed by superb piping of Liv McLennan on arrival - Liv was so Pipetastic that the male pipers were scared away - practicising at their Annual Competition at the Caledonian Club.  At 7.30pm, Simon Card OBE, President of The Royal High School Club in London, our ever own Master of Ceremonies grabbed everybody's attention in his usual commanding fashion before calling upon Wylie White, Chairman of "The Corporation", who welcomed us all again and thanked us for our continued support. Charles from Classic Tours then gave a brief introduction to the group about The Two Lochs Challenge, an RSC charity cyling event to be held in Scotland next June 17-20th - details to follow. RSC Fundraiser Lorna Duncan then drew the raffle for the merchandise so kindly donated by Lunnainn Albannaich Tartan Army (www.loonyalba.com represented Scott Kelly, Kevin Donnelly et al.). Eddie took to usual group photo. Around 8pm, the group were entertained by Emma Jane Thommen - our/RHSCL/Scots in London's very own fabulous 24 year old Songstress, Writer and Pianist - Scotland's answer to Natalie Imbruglia - who sang and played, so wonderfully, eight of her own songs and attracted more groupies (and CD sales). At 10.30pm those whom remained headed to the Essex Serpentine over the road.

Thanks to all those who attended for the first time, especially the Liv McLennan for her dazzling display on the pipes and Alison Hood representing the Caledonian Club.

7 April 2004 - FANTASTIC DRINKS EVENING OVER £200 RAISED FOR RSC
Click on the photo for further photo above from this event.
emma jane Thommen played pianoJust a short note to say many thanks to Wylie, Shona, Ruth, Elizabeth (and Marc) for coming along last night. The evening was very successful and just over 40 people attended (monies received from 35 plus a few freebies for services rendered) - exact numbers to be confirmed once I get the attendance sheet back per discussion with Diane). I think a fabulous time was had by all; smashing venue, flowing drinks and great company. Wylie's welcome and intro to the RSC was very well received. It would be fantastic if the RSC could once again become the informal social centre for Scots in London, both needy and those more fortunate. There is a huge Scots in London void which your organisation can fill. I have no doubt that your charity and its clients would be the key benefactor! As promised, deducting the cost of drinks and nibbles, I am happy to write a cheque to The Royal Scottish Corporation for £210 (more may follow if some outstanding monies are paid).
The evening kicked off at 6.30pm. Guests were welcomed outside the main front door by Mike McGlashan on the bagpipes from The Pinstripe Highlanders. Wylie said a few words aroun 8pm and we then hada few large group photos. Emma-Jane Thommen, a fabulous Scottish Songstress and Pianist then played the piano and sang a few first-class tunes. The crowd was very mixed with the usual regulars and around 15-20 new faces. The wine and beers went down exceptionally well, but I think the next time I will provide cold food as the nibbles didn't stretch far enough! Paul Cursiter made an excellent job of being barman. Many thanks to Shona for making us so welcome.
The happy group at the RSC drinks eveningI plan to send out a brief email to everyone who attended to thank them for coming along and also to pass on a copy of the photographs from the evening. Following conversation with Marc today, I am very glad that we will be able to have the courtroom again on 7th July for the Q3 2004 Quarterly Drinks. Looking forward to catching up with you, Ian, Jock, Ruth et al. at our next meeting.
Good luck in the marathon. Let me know what you'll be wearing and what time you expect to be where and we'll sort out a big cheers from an 8+ strong Scottish Posse (with Saltires etc). Per conversation with Marc, if you are looking for a piper I can ask Chris and he could also ask Mike and the rest of the Pinstripers - would be fab.
Yours aye,
Eddie

Quarterly Drinks Q2 2003: Wed 2 July 2003

Click here for more pictures of this eventThe Quarterly Scottish (Schools/Clubs/Alumni) Drinks Evening held on Wed. 2nd July went very well. It was well-attended by a very mixed crowd (~40 persons), with many new (mostly female) faces ! Thanks to all those who attended for making it an enjoyable evening and to the Hogshead for providing a free buffet feast.
Scottish (Edinburgh) Schools / Clubs in London Drinks is organised to encourage Scots to get together over a few drinks in a relaxed informal atmosphere. It brings together a very broad mix of age groups (male and female - keep it up girls/ladies !) and is a good way to meet new people in the Smoke / get together with old friends !

Quarterly Drinks Q1 2003: Wed 3 April 2003

The next Scottish Schools Quarterly Drinks Evening will be held on Wednesday 2nd April 2003 from 6.30-10pm at The Clachan, Kingly Street, Off Oxford Street. We have reverted back to the original venue for these drinks, the regular haunt of the London Daniel Stewarts Melville College Club, following their hearty recommendation and invitation. New faces are encouraged.
Click here for all the pictures from these events Despite non-complete circulation last year, attendance at these events has grown from 12 at inception (Q4 '01) to 21 (Q1 '02) for drinks between LDSMCC-RHSCL to 35 (Q2 '02 incl.LEAC, LHC, LWC, LOLS) to 41 persons (Q3 '02) to similar numbers (Q4 '02). Attendance has been very mixed by club and age groups involved and those who attend usually come back, joined by new faces as the word spreads. A strong turnout would be appreciated by all clubs and age groups.
Scottish (Edinburgh) Schools / Clubs in London Drinks is organised to encourage Scots (Edinburghers), members of clubs and new faces to get together over a few drinks in a relaxed informal atmosphere. Participants so far include Daniel Stewarts Melville College Club, London Heriot Club, London Watsonian Club, London Edinburgh Academical Club, Old Lorettonian Society, Scottish Girls Schools, Old Fettesian Club (not yet represented), Merchistonian Club (not yet represented) and The Royal High School Club in London, although all Scots (esp.from Edin!) are welcome. Around 30-40 attended in total; space became an issue (too cramped) so several attendees decided to move from the Back Bar into the adjoining bar while some had supper in the courtyard. The evening seemed to be enjoyed by those who attended, although some people where not so happy with the service as the bar apparently ran out of both beers on tap! A few ladies attended as well.

Quarterly Drinks Q1 2002: Wed 9 January 2002, The Clachan Bar, Kingly Street, W1

Unfortunately, The Clachan bar called last orders for the very last time on Friday 11th January 2002 and is currently undergoing refurbishment to be manufactured into a "trendy wine bar". As a result, we very much welcome suggestions for central venues for forthcoming pub evenings; a traditional / Scottish pub is what we are looking for. The photo, courtesy of A. Mitchell, shows 17 attendees - L-R: Back Row: C. Craig RHS 1991, K. Hill RHS 1991, G. MacKenzie RHS 1990, A.Hughes 1986; Middle Row: tbc DMSC , A.Cormack DSMC, T. Scrimgeour DSMC, F. Gray DSMC, A. This is the same weekend as England vs. Scotland. Cheap hotel accommodation may be found via LastMinute.com . If you are interested in attending, please contact the Club Secretary.
* Unfortunately, Le Meridien Waldorf Hotel had raised the price substantially (~£8pp) this year despite negotiation, hence the regrettable change of venue.

38 attended, including several new faces. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all.

Annual Buffet: Wed 15 November 2000, The Royal Scottish Corporation, Covent Garden

As those of you who attended will be aware, Liz Lauder was convalescing from an operation and so the ladies from Rothesay Court were unable to provide the catering service which has been so good in previous years. However, Marks and Spencer, Tescos and a local deli. provided some tasty snacks and the Corporation's caretaker provided my entertainment while getting the snacks from the kitchen to the Board Room! After a few minor incidents with the smoke alarm, I think all of us there enjoyed a very pleasant evening.

Annual Buffet: Wed 15 November 1999, The Royal Scottish Corporation, Covent Garden

Held in the Boardroom of The Royal Scottish Corporation, Covent Garden - a charitable organisation for needy Scots within a 30 mile radius of Trafalgar Square ().The evening corresponded with the England v Scotland Euro 2000 qualifying match at Wembley. The young crowd marched off to watch the match in a local pub. It was a pretty good night - Scotland won 1-0...but unfortunately we lost 2-1 on aggregate ! It wasn't until Scotland beat England at Murrayfield in the Five Nations in March of 2000 that we could really cheer out loud (to stop England winning the Grand Slam) !!! This photo was taken at the end of the night. Apologies to those who had left ! Haste Ye Back !

LONDON SCOTTISH GOLF CLUB CHARITY DAY Friday 12th September 2003

We are holding our annual charity day on Friday 12th September. As our two clubs have a close relationship we hope that you would be interested in entering a team to take part. The cost per team of four is £120 and we hope that you will support this worthwhile cause.
The format is stableford with the best two scores per hole counting, with a maximum handicap of 24 playing off three quarters. Preferred lies when on the fairway are permitted as this is a fun event with all profits raised being donated to local charities which the Captain of LSGC is supporting in his year of office.
Upon arrival you will receive coffee or tea and a bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of golf on a historic course used by the third oldest golf club in England - LSGC was incorporated into the Royal and Ancient in 1865 - followed by a buffet self service meal. The catering is done in this way so we can cope with a large field and also so individuals with early tee times do not have to wait around for hours in the Clubhouse.
We finish the day in the evening with a prize giving and a raffle for which tickets are sold when you arrive. We very often have an auction for donated golfing prizes that are just too memorable to be missed.
Please note that pillar-box-red upper garments must be worn on the course - this is a local by-law enforced by the Common's Conservators - and these tops can be hired or purchased from the Pro shop.
If you would like more details of the course you can visit our web site.
Should you want to obtain any further information please contact our Club Secretary Steve Barr on 020 8789 1207.

RHS CLASS OF '91 REUNION

Louise Hunter, Gordon Balfour, Stuart Davidson and Edward Tait would like to thank all those who attended the Class of '91 Reunion on Saturday 6th October 2001 held at The Royal High Athletic Club, East Barnton Avenue.
Click to see more photos of the 1991 class reunion
In total, 68 people attended: 49 FP's, 1O Partner's, 8
teachers
(big thanks)and the President of the FP Club (66 for food).

It was good to see such a broad representation of our year in one place
ten
years on. We were very pleased with the night and we hope you all had a
great
time as well. During the day, 8 of us watched the rugby (Royal High FP
beat
Irvine 13-7). The match ball was sponsored by The Class of 1991. This
was
followed by a tour around the inside of the school, bringing back a few
memories.

Thank you for your £5 contribution, which was included in the ticket
price (for all FP's and Partners). This will helped to raised £295,
which will be given to the school (by Louise and Stuart). Irish Bingo and the raffle
raised
£110 net for the FP Club, with malt whisky and 2x£20 being won by John
Murray,
Sarah Rooney and Neil Mackay respectively.

Bill and Lynn, from the bar, did a good job of keeping us well oiled and
Robin & Co. dished up a plentiful supply of tasty homemade main courses
and desserts (and some wine); thanks to them and to Jock Dewar for
raising
the toast !

We hope you also enjoyed the cheesy '80's tunes and the
photos/letterboard.
Thanks to The Royal High Athletic Club for the hire of the Clubhouse and
the
FP Club President, David Rutherford, for his guest appearance. The new
Rector,
George Smuga, sent his apologies.

All of photos from the day/evening have also been posted on to the
official RHS FP website (approximately 55 in total)
(
http://groups.msn.com/RoyalHighSchoolFPcontactsite/).

We hope that this will spur some of us to keep in contact in-between
times.
An easy way to do this is via the above website or via
http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk

We look forward to welcoming you all, and those unable to be present, in
another ten years time...

Kind regards,
Eddie, Louise, Gordon and Stuart

Committee Changes: Two Members Step Down and New Golf Captain Appointed, April 2003

Two ex-London Club Presidents and prominent Committee members, Alan Rose RHS 1949 and (Ret'd) Wing Commander Alan Robertson RHS 1951, have decided to step down from the London Committee. Alan Rose was the club president in 1984. Until his resignation, he was also the Club Golf Captain for many years. Alan felt that it was now right to pass on the reigns to a younger golfer. Alan Robertson was club president from 1998 until 2000. He is also a former Secretary of The Royal Scottish Corporation , the London-based Scottish Charity to help needy Scots within a 35 mile radius of London. The input and enthusiasm of both Alan's will be greatly missed, however both have pledged to still attend club events, whenever possible; we look forward to seeing them. Thanks on behalf of the club for their great job over the years. Alan Rose suggested that Paul Cursiter RHS 1991 would make an ideal replacement as Golf Captain. This was agreed by the Committee and so Paul is now the new RHSCL Golf Captain. Paul's first task as Captain will be to distibute details and unofficially mustering a team(s) for the London Scottish Regimental Invitation Golf Day (open to all Scots) on May 7. His first official role will be to muster up a team(s) for the Annual Golf Day at Denham run-by the London Scottish Schools Golfing Society. Full details of both events to follow. If you are interested in playing golf, whatever your level, please contact Paul on 0208 319 0977 or email cursiter@yahoo.com . The President, Committee and Club would like to wish Paul all the best in his new role.

The club would also like to welcome William Dunnett RHS 1969 (our new club webmaster) on to the committee. Will replaces Ian Duncan RHS 1949. Ian was President of the club from 1992-93. We would like to thank him for his highly-valued contribution and his continued support.

New club Website, June 2002

The Club has launched its own website, which can be accessed via http://www.royalhighlondon.org.uk . The site contains a plethora of information: "about the club", "what we do", "happy days" (recollections of teachers and their nicknames and different eras of the school), "events", "shop" and details about "subs", "the general fp site" (which includes discussions and club photos), "contacting the club" and "links" to other useful websites.
William Dunnett RHS 1969 initiated the idea of the website and followed it through to completion. On behalf of the President and the Club, I would like to say a big thank you to Webmaster Will for creating such a good site.
In addition, thanks to the 30 individuals who kindly responded to the email request asking for "teachers nicknames", included in the "happy days" section, especially to Robert Dunnett RHS 1969, Ian Cuthbert RHS 1950 and Jim Randell RHS 1944. The size and quality of the response was unanticipated.
Going forward, with the permission of the contributors, Will aims to add new articles and features on a regular basis. If you have any contributions or comments, contact him at webmaster. . Please could you help us raise awareness of the existence of the club by spreading the word to other RHS FP's, wherever they may be.

Membership, January 2001

The January 2001 newsletter unfortunately started with the very sad news that, one of our oldest Club members, Dan Logan, died just before Christmas. Dan was always keen to attend Club functions and indeed was at the cheese and wine party in November. I have written to his family passing on the condolences of the Club. He will be sadly missed.

Committee Change, January 2001

This will be my last newsletter as Secretary and Treasurer (Janette Scantlebury RHS 1981). From 23rd March, Edward Tait RHS 1991 will take over in this role although the handover will probably actually take place some time shortly after the Annual Dinner. We will try to make the handover as smooth as possible, but inevitably, there may be a few delays or hiccups for which we apologise in advance!

Subscriptions, January 2001

As you will be aware from the November 2000 Newsletter, the annual subscription (now due) is being increased to £15 to cover the increased costs in running the Club and its events. Many of you have standing orders set up to pay your subs. I (Janette Scantlebury RHS 1981) am informed by our bankers that most banks will accept your telephone or written instructions to them to increase the amount payable. However I know that some request that a fresh mandate is completed. There is therefore a mandate form enclosed with this newsletter for you to complete and send to your bankers. If you do not currently have a mandate set up but would like to start one, please also complete the form. Currently most of the standing orders are payable in March. As the Club's accounting year now runs from 1 January, it would be useful if you could arrange for the payment to be made in January or February. I would be grateful if you could also return the lower part of that page to me, regardless of how you wish to pay your subscriptions. This allows us to know whether we should expect a standing order payment for your subs and if a payment does not arrive, whether we should be chasing you, or asking you to chase up your bank. A number of members seem to forget whether they have set up a standing order or not.. If I am aware that you have, I have ticked the box on this form for you. (This saves you also sending me a cheque which I then have to return to you.)
