John Cruikshank was born on May 20th 1920, and attended the Royal High School in 1930 for 2 or 3 years. He moved to Daniel Stewart’s College from the Royal High, and completed his school education there. He tends to be ‘claimed’ by Daniel Stewart’s as their pupil, and indeed there is a substantial tribute to him in their school. He is the only living VC in Scotland and one of only 27 surviving VC holders in the World. His VC award citation can be viewed here.
A thirty minute film (including interviews with John Cruikshank) was made of the events leading to the award, and that can be seen here .
The RHS Club in Edinburgh considered that a birthday greeting to him was appropriate, and we contacted him at the ‘assisted living’ home in Aberdeen where he now resides. We decided to create a tribute, consisting of a film (which will be made available in due course), and a birthday tribute from our President Ian Cowie, and last year’s School Captain Lucy Krauth. He was happy to receive the tribute, which you can view here .
