{"id":3060,"date":"2019-12-03T15:09:11","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T15:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.royalhigh.org.uk\/?p=3060"},"modified":"2019-12-04T14:54:16","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T14:54:16","slug":"remembrance-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.royalhigh.org.uk\/wordpress\/remembrance-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembrance Service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photographs from the 2019 Remembrance Service held at the School can be found on our <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/s\/aHsmJqJgVe\" target=\"_blank\">Flickr Page<\/a>s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\nThe Royal High School 2019 Remembrance Service was held on Monday 11th November.This service was the third such event in a week, previous services having included forms&nbsp;one to four.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;This service was attended by forms five and six, also Former Pupils, the local MP, Parents Council members and other visitors.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The service opened with an introduction by Rector Pauline Walker, who was followed by a very moving address by Depute Rector Kate Fraser.\u00a0 \u00a0 She described the recently installed World War II brass remembrance tablets holding the names of the 131 War Dead, and also spoke about a famous\u00a0survivor.\u00a0 \u00a0 John Alexander Cruikshank (now 99 years of age) attended the Royal High in 1930 &#8211; it is believed just for one year.\u00a0 \u00a0 His Wikipedia entry starts&#8230;Flying Officer Cruickshank was twenty-four years old when he piloted a Consolidated Catalina anti-submarine flying boat from Sullom Voe on 17 July 1944 on a patrol north into the Norwegian Sea. The objective was to protect the British Home Fleet as it returned from the unsuccessful\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Mascot\">Operation Mascot<\/a>\u00a0raid on the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_battleship_Tirpitz\">German battleship\u00a0<em>Tirpitz<\/em><\/a>. There the &#8220;Cat&#8221; caught a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_Type_VII_submarine\">German Type VIIC U-boat<\/a>\u00a0on the surface.\u00a0\u00a0What followed was an extraordinary tale of Valour, for which we was awarded the Victoria Cross.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For the full version see\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Cruickshank\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Cruickshank<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\nHis entry in the Royal High School World War II Roll of Honour reads as follows:CRUICKSHANK, JOHN ALEXANDER (1930).T.A, R.F.A. 1939, transferred to RAF with rank of P\/O summer 1939.<br \/>Fl.\/Lieut., 1944. Awarded V.C., October 1944.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Kate Fraser also described the War Service of 1936 School Captain Douglas Ford, G.C, and how School Pupils, led by Depute Rector Paul Chambers, while on exchange visit to a Hong Kong School in 2019, visited Douglas Ford&#8217;s grave in the Stanley Military graveyard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> A now annual ceremony took place, where the youngest pupil in school, assisted by two School Captains, turns a page in the World War II book of remembrance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Wreaths were laid by the President of the RHS Club (Ian Cowie) on the steps of the WWI Memorial Porch, and by two School Captains at the WWII Memorial Windows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The last post was sounded by Zak McCulloch.
