Prize Winning Poem 2023

Winner – Kate McGovern

Pauline Walker has forwarded Kate McGovern’s poem ‘Hiding in the woods’ which has won the 2023 London Club prize for an English poem. Kate’s catchy first line ‘Hope hides in the woods’ drew me in and I hope you will enjoy the poem too. (Alex Prentice)   read it here

    Christmas Drinks Party December 2022

Early arrivals found the Iron Duke pub crammed with drinkers watching Spain versus Morocco on a large screen. After the last kick of the game the crush gradually eased and we were able to find our table in the corner near the bar. Our party soon got under way and, as usual, the Iron Duke’s…

Performing Arts

There was a Second World War post-war flurry of stage performances, mainly due to outstanding pupil producers and English teachers. 1949 School Dux Karl Miller and Head of English Hector MacIver (Principal English Master 1947-1966) were leaders in this respect. Signed programs, photos and reviews from the 1948 of “The Authors of Mischief” and the 1950 production of “Just The Job” can be viewed on Drama at the Royal High School 1948 to 1950 page. “The Authors of Mischief” is based on the true events surrounding the shooting of a town official by an aristocratic Royal High Pupil in 1595.

In the 1960s the Dramatic Society staged a number of plays including Becket and Othello. Programs and photographs from these productions feature those who went on to excel in the arts and media including members of our Club. View the Drama at the Royal High in the 1960s to find out more.

RHS Former Pupil Biographies

Rector Pauline Walker asked the School Historian to create a number of contemporary biographies of former pupils.

There are many pupils in the Barnton era, and even since the millennium who have made considerable names for themselves. The first six of these are now on the website on the RHS Former Pupil Biographies page with an interview for each.

In addition the RHS History project has compiled shorter biographies in a longer list of distinguished FPs which is available in PDF format and may be downloaded.
