We are sad to report that Janette Scantlebury has passed away after a long illness. Janette was the President of the Royal High School Club in London from 2001 to 2003 and she performed that role, for part of the time, from her home in Shetland. Janette and her partner Alan Rolfe had moved to Shetland when Alan started a job with the Shetland Islands Council. Janette was passionate about animals and in recent years she kept horses on their smallholding in the small community of Huxter in Sandness. Janette was a stalwart of the Royal High School Club in London who will be sadly missed. The accompanying photo of Janette was taken at the Annual Buffet in November 2003.

Alan , I have literally reams of pages of 35mm negatives , and boxes of 35mm slides ( no digital photography back then ) which I will need to go through . Please send me your email . I promise I will send any relevant photos I find .
German friends I remember include Sabine Schmitz , Kerstin Fleingsdorf , Oliver …..
It has been more than 40 years !
Kindest regards
Derek .
PS , I’m probably , if she mentioned me at all , the uncouth , uncivilised , idiot boyfriend with a Mercedes 280E that she may have told you about ?
I’d love to hear from Jan’s husband Alan ; my email is derekheeps@mac.com
Jan and I parted ways around 1982/1983 , but I never had anything but fond memories of her .
I would never have a bad word to say about her , and only wish I’d been able to say goodbye . So much harder to lose someone younger , I’m 65 .
I am so sorry to read of Jan’s passing ; she was my first girlfriend , circa 1981/1982 . We dated for around a year .
Thanks to Jan , I took an interest in learning German ; only took French and Latin at school . Over time I picked up reasonable conversational German , but never fluent . I suspect I knew several of the same students Jan kept in touch with .
She was such a nice girl/lady and I am just so upset to learn that she has passed before I did . My thoughts turned to her many times over the years , but it is my bad that I never made more of an effort to trace her .
Jan will always remain close to my heart .
I am distraught to learn of Jan’s passing .
It has been more than 40 years , but Jan ( as I knew her ) was my first girlfriend , and we dated for around a year . I worked in one of the Edinburgh schools , and she assisted with the German exchange students . I visited her , and her mother , in Cramond on many occasions . Alas it was not to be and our relationship fizzled out , although I saw her buy her dream Triumph Herald PFS 51G , in Wedgwood Blue ; around the same time as I bought my 1957 Mercedes 219 , CSC 678B ( imported ) ; in mid 1982 , just after the Falklands conflict .
While we drifted apart , I never stopped caring about Jan : she was a genuinely nice person , and I feel so undeserving that I have outlived her .
